DN Shield

HomeTechnology

Independently developed protection technology.

DN Shield is building its own protection architecture and virtualization engine, rather than wrapping third-party components — with a strong emphasis on correctness, compatibility and transparent reporting.

01 Code virtualization · Enterprise

A VM only DN Shield understands.

Working prototype — in development

Traditional obfuscation modifies the structure and readability of existing instructions. Code virtualization takes a fundamentally different approach: selected .NET methods are translated into a custom instruction representation and executed through DN Shield’s proprietary runtime interpreter.

Rather than leaving the protected method body available as ordinary CIL, DN Shield replaces supported methods with execution stubs that delegate to the virtualization runtime. The runtime interprets the transformed instruction data and performs the original method’s operations — adding a substantial layer of complexity for anyone trying to understand the application’s internal behaviour.

Honest about status. A functional prototype has been developed and tested against a growing set of supported instructions and sample methods, including simple WinForms scenarios. Instruction coverage, compatibility, runtime hardening and performance are still under active development. DN Shield does not claim its virtualization is impossible to unpack or reverse engineer.

Select a method with the standard attribute
[System.Reflection.Obfuscation(
    Feature = "Virtualization",
    Exclude = false)]
private int CalculateLicenseValue(int input)
{
    return (input * 17) + 42;
}

DN Shield recognises the standard ObfuscationAttribute and selects the marked method for virtualization. The attribute itself does nothing at runtime — the protection engine performs the transformation — so you never need to add a proprietary library reference to your code. Selective, method-level application lets you balance protection against interpretation overhead.

02 Architecture

Principles the VM is built on.

Independent technology

Its own compiler, instruction representation and interpreter — not a third-party engine.

Method-level protection

Target proprietary calculations, validation routines and commercially sensitive logic.

Custom instruction execution

Protected methods become instructions understood only by the DN Shield runtime.

Application compatibility

Virtualized methods preserve return values, object state and exception propagation.

Performance awareness

Virtualization adds overhead, so it’s applied selectively — you choose the trade-off.

Protection reporting

Methods that can’t be safely virtualized are reported clearly, never silently skipped.

03 Enterprise · Application packing

Application packer Planned

A custom packer is planned to complement obfuscation and virtualization. Where virtualization focuses on selected logic, packing addresses how application components are organised, stored and distributed.

  • Bundle supported dependencies and assemblies into a convenient distribution package
  • Compress supported content where practical to reduce distribution size
  • Additional protection for embedded resources and selected components
  • Verify packaged components to detect unexpected modification
  • Predictable execution, legitimate code signing and supported-environment compatibility

The long-term vision is DN Shield’s own packing technology rather than an external packer. This is a planned capability, not a current feature.

04 Development philosophy

Reliability before complexity.

Correctness first

A protection that crashes or corrupts output is worse than none. Reproducible results and conservative handling of unsupported instructions.

Engine separate from UI

The protection engine is decoupled from the desktop app, so the architecture can evolve and support future automation and testing.

Transparent reporting

You should always understand which protections were applied, which were skipped, and why.

Responsible engineering

Built for legitimate IP protection — not as a malware concealment platform, security-bypass tool or persistence mechanism.

Compatibility

Support a practical range of .NET Framework and, over time, modern .NET — established through testing, not assumption.

Commercial quality

A finished release must meet the expectations of paying developers, not merely demonstrate a concept.
